Image showing Carven object

A carved wooden ridge-pole formed of a rectangular wooden beam with triangular cross-section, with a large tenon carved on one end and elaborate carvings on the flat, lower face (the tenon on the other end has been sawn off). These designs make up two anthropomorphic figures with their feet together at the centre and their large heads at each end.

At the sawn-off end is a figure with an oval, tattooed face (relief carvings depicting the tattooing) and eyes inlaid with haliotis shell; it is very similar to that on the door no. 97 below. The decoration on it is in the form of broad lines of uncut wood in relief, each separated by three parallel incised grooves on the lower part and by a single broader groove on the upper. The lines radiate from the nose area, 4 running downwards on either side of the mouth to the chin and 4 slanting upwards on each side of the forehead. Between these areas of relief lines, or bands, are curvilinear designs made of similar bands. The nose is almost straight, ridged and lacks nostrils; it has incised lines forming a double running spiral on each side. The eyes slant slightly upwards and outwards and are inlaid with ovals of haliotis shell, each with a hole on the centre which fits over a knob of wood forming the pupil.

Below the head is a stylised trunk in the form of a small sausage- shape with, on either side, a stylised arm with exaggerated rounded shoulder; each of these is ornamented with a spiral carved in relief and formed of broad concentric grooves, and of grooves with a row of relief dots in them. The left hand, with 4 fingers, is across the trunk and the right, with 3 fingers, touches the chin. The legs seem to be missing, the next feature below apparently being the feet of the other figure.

The second figure has a huge, square, mask-like head with large, shell-inlaid eyes (slanting upwards and outwards) , a straight, ridged nose with nostrils, and a huge open mouth with teeth and large protrud- ing tongue. The nose is decorated with a double running spiral of incised lines on each side; the eyes are surrounded by a deep groove (with V-shaped cross section) and the forehead is decorated with a curvilinear pattern of deep, V-sectioned grooves concentric with similar grooves containing a row of knobs in relief. The mouth is surrounded by similar interrupted grooves with a spiral of plain ones at each upper corner. The tongue has a small area of ornament of grooves and notched grooves.

Below the head is a narrow neck, touched by the tongue, with two large, round, stylised shoulders ornamented in a similar way to those on the opposed figure. The two arms -- similarly ornamented -- both extend downwards and inwards to form right angles, the right one having a large hand with 4 fingers spread across the trunk (the upper part of which is ornamented like the shoulders), the left arm being handless. Further down are short legs with stylised, rounded thighs each decorated with a spiral formed of a deep, V-sectioned groove. Between these thighs is a small, crudely carved face with a protruding tongue and on top of what looks like a downward-pointing penis, the tip being between the feet. The short, lower halves of the legs end in large, inward- pointing feet, also decorated with grooves and notched grooves.

The deeper grooves and excavated areas contain abundant traces of red paint or ochre. The tenon is in the form of a short neck with a larger knob on it -- the latter being flat on the flat side of the beam and rounded on the other. The rounded side has a crude faced carved on it, with blank eyes, nose and slit-like mouth with protruding tongue. Length 1.94m, width 31cm, thickness 00cm. (E.332: pl. 00, no. 00).
