Dr John Fothergill was a Quaker physician, who had a shell collection which was second to only that of the Duchess of Portland. Fothergill acted as a mediator in controversy between Sydney Parkinson and his brother Stanfield over various issues, including the disposal of Sydney's shell collection. This resulted in Fothergill purchasing Parkinson's shells which were collected on the 1st voyage. Upon Fothergill's death, his collection of shells, corals and insects was purchased by Dr William Hunter for £1100. This material was at first in the Hunterian Museum; it was later moved to the University's Zoology Museum. |
