Carved Stone Ball Types

Type 4

This type of carved stone ball is characterised by having 6 knobs, and they can be either prominent or disc like.




Type 4a

This is the most common type of carved stone ball and consists of 6 low cut knobs,although some may have sharp edges.

The majority of this type come from Aberdeenshire but they are also found across Scotland, with a handful known in England.




Type 4c

The decoration for this type of carved stone ball consists of 6 knobs with worked interspaces. The balls are well defined and clearly cut.




Type 5

The carved stone balls of this type are characterised by having 7 knobs. However they may have prominent bosses or shallow discs and the knobs may vary in size on some of the balls.




Type 6

This type of carved stone ball consists of 8 knobs although there may be a variation in the size of the knobs. They can also be found in the interspaces.




Type 7

The decoration may consist of 10 - 55 knobs for this type of carved stone ball. They are well made with evenly spaced bosses. A few balls have knobs of differing sizes and the examples from Orkney have prominent cube like knobs.




Type 9b

The decorations on carved stone balls of Type 9 vary. However there are 3 categories of design which include spirals, concentric circles or incised lines and hatchings. More than one design may be used on the same ball.
