Building Forts
The Roman army built forts as its permanent installations, to oversee newly conquered territory. The ramparts were of stone or turf. The internal buildings were timber-framed, or of stone with heavy tiled roofs. Within a fort most of the buildings were barracks. There was a centrally placed headquarters building, a house for the commanding officer, one or more granaries containing the garrison's food supply, some storebuildings and stables. There was also a bath-house. The army's own carpenters and stonemasons undertook the work.
